Second generation of 5 series was produced in 1981. The sedan was introduced with engines ranging from 90 to 184 hp. Already in 1984 there was the sports version of BMW M535i with a capacity of 218 hp. In 1983 BMW 524td in-line 6-cylinder engine of 2.4 liters and 115 hp, possessed the best dynamic performance and the highest efficiency of diesel cars in its segment, it was the first diesel engine from BMW.
