The car was designed by Belgian car designer Luc Dankervolke known as the designer of Lamborghini Murciélago and Lamborghini Gallardo. The design was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2008 as a concept car Seat Bocanegra. The car was initially built on PQ25 platform from VW Group. First Ibiza (6J) was produced in 5-door hatchback body type. Later, at the end of 2010, 3-door coupe hatchback and 5-door station wagon ST were added.
